THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teamed up with Hi 5 to provide some holiday cheer to local families in the community through an Angel Tree event. The Angel Tree was placed in Barker Hall in November, which was decorated with ornaments that consisted of a child’s name provided by Hi 5, as well as their gender, age, clothing and shoe size, and wish list. Whoever picked the ornament from the tree would purchase items from the list and wrap them to be gifted to the child. The gift presentations began Monday, Dec. 10, at the Cotillion Ballroom in the Donald G. Bollinger Memorial Student Union on the Nicholls campus. The children and their families, along with Nicholls student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, and members of the Hi 5 organization gathered for dinner. Following the meal, the children whose names were placed on the tree were presented with gifts by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.“It was a great experience,” said Al Wilson, President of SAAC and member of the Colonel football team. “It’s very humbling and reminds you of where you came from. Interacting with kids makes you feel better about everything that you go through and makes you remember why you got into a sport and the fun that you had as a kid.”As part of the “Southland Gives Back” initiative, the Southland Conference will profile a community service outing from each of our 13 member institutions this holiday season.
