A&M-Corpus Christi Secures Another Sweep of Southland Tennis Weekly Honors

first_imgWeek Four Stats (Men) | Week Four Stats (Women)FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Ryuya Ata and Camille Townsend are the Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Townsend led a perfect week for the Islanders women, who didn’t surrender a single point in wins over Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M-Kingsville and UTRGV. The sophomore from Coconut Creek, Fla., also enjoyed an unblemished week, winning every single set across her three singles and three doubles wins. A&M-Corpus Christi (10-1) will take a breather before their non-conference finale against UTSA at 2 p.m. on Feb. 18. For the third-straight week, Ata earns Southland honors after maintaining his flawless records with three singles wins and two doubles victories last week. The Islanders (9-1) came out of their busy stretch unscathed with four wins over Prairie View A&M, UTRGV and UT-Arlington. A&M-Corpus Christi faces Rice at noon CT Tuesday before participating in the Louisiana Bayou Team Invite this weekend in Lafayette, La. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots. Alongside doubles partner Mariya Shumeika, the duo won their top-line doubles contests handily with a 6-1 victory against Prairie View A&M and a 6-2 triumph against A&M-Kingsville. The tandem is 6-2 at No. 1 doubles in 2020. This week’s recognition is the first for Townsend and the second-straight for A&M-Corpus Christi after teammate Kei Kato earned the award last week. He began the week with comfortable victories at the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday. The following day, Ata secured another straight-set triumph at No. 2 singles over UTRGV’s Carlo Izuireta and teamed up with William Mottet to take down the Vaqueros’ top-line doubles pair 6-3, improving to 4-0 at No. 1 doubles this spring. Women’s Tennis Player of the Week – Camille Townsend, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – So. – Coconut Creek, Fla.In a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M last Tuesday, Townsend faced off with J. Duran Castellanos twice, sweeping her at both No. 2 and No. 1 singles. Townsend remained unbeaten (9-0) in solo action with identical 6-1, 6-0 decisions against A&M-Kingsville’s Laura Montalvo and UTRGV’s Ana Platisa. After losing the first set to UT-Arlington’s Miguel Cabrera, Ata stormed back to win set two 6-4 and blanked Cabrera 6-0 in the final frame to secure the match-winning point and move to 9-0 in singles play. The Islanders trailed 3-1 before capturing the final three singles matches. The honor marks the third-straight Player of the Week award for Ata.last_img
