The award was accepted by Seventh Generation CEO John Replogle at a special presentation at the United Nations Global Conference for Social Change in New York City.Replogle elaborated on the company’s mission to embrace a triple bottom line that balances people, planet and profit in an interview with event moderator and New York Times editor, Jane Bornemeier.”Seventh Generation has received an incredible number of honors in our 23-year history, but I’m not sure that we’ve ever received one as meaningful as this,” said Replogle. “It’s a tremendous acknowledgement of the progress we’ve been making to pursue our company’s purpose to have an impact beyond profit. I think it speaks to a growing global desire to find better ways of doing business, leading industry and serving consumers. first_imgNorth Carolina camp-based and experiential learning program awarded $20,000 grantHendersonville, NC based non-profit Camplify has been awarded a $20,000 People In Need grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The mission of Camplify is to use a series of camp-based and experiential learning programs to teach kids-in-need the life skills required to succeed and become the leaders of tomorrow. The grant will offer additional support to high school students that participate in the Camplify program. The students will experience apartment hunting, “buying” a vehicle, applying for full-time work, and budgeting at Camplify’s first high school overnight retreat. Camplify connects over 200 WNC youth with skill-building opportunities utilizing camp and monthly retreats each year. Six barges carrying coal have sunk into the Ohio RiverA towboat pushing 15 coal barges on the Ohio River struck the Second Street Bridge in Louisville, KY on Christmas day sinking 6 of the barges and spilling tons of coal into the Ohio River. Three barges are still stuck on the dam at the Falls for the Ohio. One of stuck barges is on the gates of the dam, so the Army Corp of Engineers doesn’t have complete control of water levels. Six other barges have been recovered. The first four barges to sink spilled up to 1800 tons of coal into the river. “Raw coal going into the river is primarily going to disrupt habitat on the bottom of the river,” Jason Flickner, Executive Director of the Lower Ohio River Waterkeeper told Louisville’s Wave 3 News. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers employees are working around the clock to recover the barges but they aren’t being paid because of the federal government shutdown. First ever case of North Carolina black bear found dead of rabiesA black bear found dead on the North Carolina coast has tested positive for the raccoon strain of rabies, the first known case of a rabies-positive bear in the state. Since 1999 there have been only four known cases of rabies in wild black bears in the entire United States. Mike Carraway, a wildlife biologist with the NC wildlife resources commission told the Asheville Citizen-Times that he doesn’t think the rabies case will have an impact on the state’s bear population. “Rabies in bears, while possible, is extremely rare,” says Carraway. “This bear most likely was bitten by a raccoon. But bears and raccoons don’t interact that much. It’s an isolated incident that we may never see again.” Rabies can affect all mammals, causing inflammation in the brain with symptoms that include lethargy, loss of balance, fever, anorexia, and eye and nose discharge. There are an estimated 25,000 black bears in North Carolina.last_img read more

Yuriko Koike: Savvy politician challenging Japan’s glass ceiling

| rcmlm

first_imgTokyo governor Yuriko Koike is a conservative political veteran with a commanding media presence who has shown the toughness needed to climb the greasy pole of Japan’s male-dominated politics. The former television anchorwoman, long seen as potentially Japan’s first female prime minister, has found herself in the national spotlight during the coronavirus pandemic, appearing daily on TV to brief the megacity’s 14 million residents. Her calm and measured speeches, peppered with catchy slogans, have presented a sharp contrast to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has been viewed as too slow to act or too rigid and opaque in his addresses. Koike swept easily to a second term but critics say the 67-year-old’s first four years as governor were more about grabbing headlines than getting the job done.Fluent in English, and with conversational Arabic, Koike is a rare internationalist in Japan’s navel-gazing politics.Born in 1952 in Ashiya city in western Japan, Koike attended the region’s Kwansei Gakuin University before graduating from Cairo University in Egypt in 1976.After a stint as a translator, she worked as a television broadcaster, interviewing Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi and Palestinian Liberation Organisation chair Yasser Arafat. She first won an upper house seat in 1992 before switching to the more powerful lower house the following year. She joined the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in 2002 and became environment minister in 2003.During Abe’s first stint as PM, Koike served as a special advisor before becoming Japan’s first female defence minister. While she rubbed shoulders with top political figures, she enjoyed only lukewarm support inside the LDP and failed in her bid to become party chief. When she ran in the Tokyo gubernatorial race in 2016, the LDP supported a different, male candidate. The people of Tokyo, however, embraced her reformist zeal and gave her a landslide victory, making her the first woman governor of the Japanese capital, home to more than a tenth of Japan’s entire population. The next year, she took a huge gamble in launching a new national “Party of Hope”, but support fizzled after a promising start, where it looked like she could present a serious challenge to Abe.Her decision to stay as governor left the public unsure about who would become PM if her party won the national election and she suffered a heavy defeat at the polls.Allies turned rivals, Koike and Abe maintained cordial working relations as they jointly prepared for the Tokyo Olympics, which would have been a major political legacy for both of them. But the coronavirus pandemic forced a one-year delay of the Games after costly preparations.Koike quickly shifted her focus to the fight against the infection, giving daily media briefings and issuing warnings to Tokyoites that worse was to come. She repeated catchy anti-virus slogans in her televised addresses to encourage the entire nation to stay home and avoid crowds. In her re-election bid, Koike comfortably ran an independent, online-only campaign, with senior LDP members opening supporting her bid.Topics :last_img read more

Gender Identity: The in-betweeners

first_imgSydney Morning Herald 1 August 2015It was the tears that first signalled to Cecile Stuart* that she was no longer a man. Living for five years as Michael and receiving a dose of testosterone daily, crying for the then-28-year-old had been almost impossible.“I just didn’t feel like crying, even when things were really, really bad,” she says as we sit in the living room of her house near Melbourne, children’s bikes in the front yard and a forgotten, straggling vegetable patch in the back. But three months after coming off the male hormones and reclaiming her female birth gender, she was once more able to shed tears. This was about the worst thing I could have done to my body, my life and myself.Other physical characteristics were, unfortunately, more stubborn. “I felt like exactly the same person, but I had a full-on beard and had to have whole body electrolysis twice a week for two years,” she recalls of the traumatic transition nearly 20 years ago. “It was horrible.”How she went on to deal with her surgically flattened chest, muscly frame, family, colleagues and society at large – quite apart from the underlying psychological condition that had now caused her to change her gender not once, but twice – is another question.http://www.smh.com.au/good-weekend/the-inbetweeners-20150730-ginojq.htmllast_img read more

Disciplined India earnT20 series win in shortened shootout against Kiwis

first_imgINDIA turned in a brilliant bowling performance to win an eight-over shootout against New Zealand by six runs to clinch a thrilling 2-1 Twenty20 international series victory. After the teams had split the opening two contests of a keenly fought series, the decider was substantially delayed by rain in Thiruvananthapuram. The poor conditions meant that only eight overs a side were played and, having chosen to bowl, New Zealand restricted the hosts to 67-5, with Tim Southee (2-13) and Ish Sodhi (2-23) the pick of their bowlers. And India defended that paltry total, with the restricted overs suiting the hosts’ brilliance at death bowling, as the tourists mustered just 61-6 in reply to leave Virat Kohli’s team celebrating a first T20 series win against New Zealand.New Zealand were disciplined in their bowling and Southee had dangerous openers Shikhar Dhawan (6) and Rohit Sharma (8) out in consecutive balls in the third over, with Mitchell Santner taking the catch on both occasions.Kohli slogged 13 off just six deliveries, but silence swept the home stadium when the skipper followed a six with a pull to midwicket off Sodhi that Trent Boult cupped.Sodhi also accounted for Shreyas Iyer (6), but Manish Pandey (17) and Hardik Pandya (14) made valuable contributions to boost India’s tally. Those runs proved extremely valuable by the time Martin Guptill (1) was bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Colin Munro (7) – a centurion in the second T20 – had sent Jasprit Bumrah to Sharma, who took a fine fingertip catch running back from mid-on.A brilliant run out from Pandya spelled the end for dangerman Kane Williamson (8), while Henry Nicholls (2) and Tom Bruce (4) also failed to trouble the scoreboard in a chase that never got going, despite a valiant effort from Colin de Grandhomme (17).(Omnisport)last_img read more

USC researchers develop crime mapping project

first_imgStudents and researchers at USC’s Spatial Science Institute are helping Los Angeles officials address crime in the city using data and location services. The project, titled “A Spatial Analysis of Street-level Crime Trends in L.A,” focuses on exploring how the locations of crimes are related to social and built environments using GeoHub, a mapping platform that shows location-based data. Variables such as the unemployment rate or the proximity of street lights in the immediate area are recorded so viewers can analyze correlations between environmental characteristics and where crimes are actually committed. The idea behind the study is that law enforcement can use this information to deploy patrols and utilize their resources more effectively. In one example, observers can take note of the time of day and day of the week a crime took place, as well as whether it occurred near a school, liquor store or Metro stop. By identifying these patterns, police departments can adjust the way they deploy officers to deter crime. The study was spearheaded by postdoctoral research associate Noli Brazil and Geographic Information System project specialist Beau MacDonald, while undergraduates Izzy Mitchell, Richard Windisch, Kyra Schoonover, Robin Franke and Leonard Ngo and spatial informatics master’s student Yuqing Qian also contributed. In December, the group presented this project to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s data team and the Los Angeles Police Department. Several major Los Angeles public officials and collaborators with the mayor’s office attended the presentation, including Garcetti’s chief data officer Lilian Coral, data fellow Sari Ladin and policy director for public safety Brian Buchner. Arnold Suzukamo, a GIS specialist at the LAPD, also attended.“We were so impressed with the high quality of work that the Spatial Sciences Institute has done,” Buchner said, according to USC News. “They have brought us an innovative approach that will be tremendously useful as the mayor’s office, LAPD and other city stakeholders work to develop policies and strategies to improve community safety.”last_img read more
